Life. Or At Least A Reasonable Facsimile.
January 30, 2004
The past few days have been a humdrum routine that has had little in the way of anything major going on. It’s like the old McDonald’s commercial:
“Get up, go to work, go home, go to bed.”
That’s OK. For now anyway. Life tends to settle into routines for everyone, so this is nothing major. It’s actually been somewhat refreshing as life before that was a bit too exciting for my taste.
Emma has been really active lately, and is growing quickly. Last night she took not one, not two, but three bottles in the span of six hours. She is developing strength to sit up nicely, and should be able to sit unsupported relatively soon. She is able to roll around the floor quite well too. She hasn’t quite gotten the hang of crawling just yet though. She can’t quite seem to get her arms and legs to work together. When we are on our bed, she will go from a sitting to a crawling position, but just as quickly fall flat on her face. I’m thinking she needs some arm strength.
School is going well this term. So far my Network Administration class is absolutely fantastic. I love the concepts of setting up PCs and networking them together to share information. Currently I can build a PC from scratch and load Windows (or Linux, or Knoppix, or any other OS) on it that I want. To be able to build a PC and design a network around it has got to be worth a dime in somebody’s book.
My MIS class is also going well. The format is online, and this is the first online course I’ve taken so it is somewhat of an adjustment. I think I prefer the structure of showing up in class, listening to and participating in a lecture, and getting assignments in. Being online means there is less structure, and I need that gentle kick in the arse to get my assignments done. I haven’t turned any in late mind you, but I need that reinforcement to make me get off my butt to work.
Cheryl has decided to stay home with Emma either full or part-time.
Unfortunately her current employer won’t let her work part-time or telecommute. This forces us into making the choice of either keeping Cheryl working full-time, which she doesn’t want to do, or to quit. This pretty much sucks as Cheryl has a lot of time in with her employer and has seniority and all the other benefits that come with a tenured employee, and she has to choose to give all that up to stay home with Emma.
All I can say is the United States absolutely has to get a national child care policy.
A Little Bit of Magic
January 24, 2004
In my last post I offered up congratulations to Rick & Kathy on the news of the new little one soon to join us.
Sadly they informed us yesterday that Kathy lost the baby.
Mother and family are doing fine, although I feel that a little bit of magic left the world the day before yesterday.
See you someday on the other side little one.

Mother Nature saw fit to grace our little village and surrounding environs with an ice storm yesterday. As such, we nearly lost power twice last night. Not a good thing when you have a four month old and you want to make sure that she stays nice and cozy warm.
Navigating the sidewalks and the streets sure was a spectacle though. It’s always cool to see lots of cars sliding. Especially the hundred or so big rigs that go right by our front door every day. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a semi jackknife in your posey beds. Git’r done!
Congratulations go out to Rick and Kathy, as they are now expecting another little one. Matthew gets to be a big brother finally
I’m looking forward to another rugrat to spoil and it will be nice for Emma to have a playpal.
I like being an Uncle. It’s teh rules.
Oh well. Bedtime. More soon.
Duty, Dooty, and Bling-Bling Among Other Things

Sorry about the lack of frequent updates. It’s time to start back to school and as such my free time is once again a rare and valuable item.
Emma started in on solid foods this past week. We’ve been giving her higher concentrations of rice cereal as well as pears, carrots and other assorted fruits and vegetables.
I have to tell you, as a first time parent it’s a bit unnerving to change a dirty bum and find a color other than green or brown. It’s almost enough to make you wonder if her Colon is functioning properly. I’ll leave it at that and let your imagination walk down the carrot patch on it’s own.
School this term is a continuation of my Management Information Systems course and Network Administration. My NetAdmin class is completely fascinating. The book for the class could sit on my bedside table and I could read to my daughter from it. It has a plot, main characters, and mentions cryptic and arcane terms like attenuation, bandwidth, routing, and switching alot. *Insert drooling sound here*
Some people get excited discussing the torque and horsepower in their Dodge Viper. I tend to get worked up over terms like Intel, Cisco, Sony, and anything involving the words “Plasma TV”. Call me crazy. Go on. Do it.
Cheryl tends to roll her eyes and throw her hands up in the air when I start talking like this. To her I sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher. Oddly enough, to me, everything makes perfect sense. Go figure. At least I’m not baking PC’s in my oven.
Question for you to consider: How does my daughter know to wake up exactly 45 minutes before my alarm clock is supposed to go off?
Just curious.
